DR. MUSILIYU A MUSA
Professor of Chemistry
Dr. Musiliyu A. Musa is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), Tallahassee, Florida. He earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry (1993) and M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry (1996) from the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and his Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry (2003) from Rhodes University, South Africa. He completed postdoctoral training at FAMU’s College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences through the NIH-funded Drug Discovery Program (2004–2006).
Dr. Musa began his academic career as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Durban-Westville, South Africa, before joining FAMU in 2004 as an Adjunct Instructor. He advanced to Assistant Professor (2006), Associate Professor with tenure (2012), and Full Professor (2018). He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Chemistry and is committed to mentoring students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
His research focuses on Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Drug Discovery, with an emphasis on the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of heterocyclic compounds, particularly coumarins, as potential therapeutic agents. His work explores applications in anticancer, monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibition, antiviral, antimicrobial, and antioxidant therapies.
Dr. Musa has published extensively in peer-reviewed international journals (Google Scholar and ResearchGate). He has secured external funding, serves as a reviewer for multiple scientific journals, and actively collaborates with researchers across national and international institutions.
